This is a Water Monitor, somewhat different from the Monitor Lizards which prowl the rainforests. Both species can grow to about five feet in length. Notice that the legs are folded tightly against the body when swimming, while the long tail (cut off in this photo) provides propulsion. It resembles a crocodile in many respects, and occupies practically the same ecological niche.
